What if cellulose microfibrillation could finally become compatible with industrial-scale production while keeping production costs under control?


Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is paving the way for a new generation of bio-based materials: reinforced paper and board, barrier coatings, sustainable packaging, composites and more. However, its industrial deployment is still hindered by high production costs, low solids content and significant logistical constraints.

For the past ten years, CTP, together with its academic and industrial partners, has been developing an innovative approach based on twin-screw extrusion, enabling the direct production of MFC at 25% solids content, compared with only around 3% for conventional processes. This technology helps reduce production, storage and transportation costs while preserving the functional properties of MFC.

But our expertise goes far beyond MFC production. We support industrial partners across the entire value chain:

  • Assessing the microfibrillation potential of new cellulosic resources at high solids content, including virgin and recycled fibres, annual plants, lignocellulosic biomass, cellulosic process co-products or waste streams, and fibres subjected to innovative pretreatments;
  • Optimizing pretreatment and microfibrillation processes;
  • Developing MFC grades tailored to specific applications, processing conditions or clearly defined specifications;
  • Pilot-scale production and performance validation before industrial scale-up.
Our pilot facilities enable us to produce several kilograms of MFC, characterize their morphology, rheology, mechanical, optical and barrier properties, and benchmark them against commercial references to secure technological choices before investment.

Our objective is simple: to turn MFC from a promising material into a competitive industrial solution by reducing technical risks, accelerating scale-up and developing high-value bio-based materials for packaging, technical papers and tomorrow’s applications.
