The management of solid residues is an important economic issue for paper / board mills. Sludge dewatering optimisation can minimize the costs of treating sewage sludge. The choice and dosage of the chemicals used for conditioning before sludge dewatering are two of the key optimization factors.
Our methodology of expertise associated with efficient diagnostic tools allow us to choose the flocculant / coagulant best suited to sludge, dewatering technology used and to determine the optimum dosage.

Technical Data and Achievements

Rheometer

The Floccky Tester is a device specifically developed to study the flocculation of sludge.
The advantage of this measurement method using the rheological sludge properties is to give information on the degree of sludge flocculation but also information on the resistance of the flocs to shear, important information in industrial dewatering mechanisms.

The proposed test makes it possible to:

• Determine the intensity of flocculation and the degree of shear strength of a slurry with flocculants of different molecular weight and density of charges.
  
• Select the conditioning products best suited to the quality of the sludge and the dewatering technology used.

Filtration cell

A compression filtration cell for determining the specific resistance of sludge to filtration, the compressibility and the dryness that a sludge cake can reach by filtration under a given pressure. These parameters allow to select polymers and dehydration technologies as well as to compare the efficiency of several flocculants. The method is also applicable to characterize the extraction potential of valuable molecules contained in lignin filtrates.

The proposed test makes it possible to:

• Characterize the aptitude of sludge dewatering conditioned with different flocculants.
