The optical properties of paper and board, such as whiteness, brightness, opacity and colour, are important characteristics taken into account by paper buyers and suppliers alike.
To control measuring instruments, guarantee exact measurements and hence the reliability of the stated specifications, it is necessary to calibrate spectrophotometers correctly.
The IR3 reference standards issued by the Centre Technique du Paper can be used to calibrate instruments in accordance with the ISO standards in force and to correct any possible discrepancies.
Fluorescent and non-fluorescent IR3 reference standards
Context and performance
In order to perform optical measurements in accordance with the international standards in force, measuring instruments shall be calibrated using pads of reference papers.
These papers are issued only by Authorised Laboratories in accordance with ISO 4094.
The Centre Technique du Paper is one of only five organisations in the world authorised to issue reference standards for calibrating optical measuring instruments..

Content of services
So-called “IR3” reference standards, in the form of non-fluorescent and fluorescent paper pads, are available from our accredited laboratory.
Non-fluorescent IR3 pads are used to calibrate reflectance factors. This shall be done regardless of the type of paper tested.
Fluorescent pads are used to adjust C and D65 filters. This is only necessary when fluorescent papers are measured.
It is possible to subscribe on a monthly, two-monthly, quarterly or annual basis.
Deliverables
Non-fluorescent IR3 reference standards
- Diffuse reflectance between 400 nm and 700 nm every 10 nm or every 20 nm.
- Brightness, according to ISO 2470-1.
- Rx, Ry, Rz values for information purposes.
Fluorescent IR3 reference standards
- CIE whiteness, according to ISO 11475 for UV adjustment with D65 illuminant.
- Brightness according to ISO 2470-1 for UV adjustment with C illuminant.
- D65 brightness according to ISO 2470-2, for information.
