A 3R approach to increase packaging sustainability and circularity

logo-au3ra
Improve the sustainability and circularity of packaging through a 3R approach
In the context of regulatory and public policy developments (SUPD, Law AGEC, ...) and its statutory missions, the CTP has joined forces with its regional counterparts the CT IPC and the CTCPA to consolidate future actions around a multi-site Au3Ra resources platform for a 3R approach in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Objectives of the platform

Working on the 3Rs :
  • REDUCTION targets non-recyclable Single-Use Packaging by improving eco-design and encouraging the substitution of all or part of the plastic by fibrous materials and ensuring their effective functionality and recyclability.
  • RE-EMPLOYMENT targets packaging in contact with foodstuffs, by working on ecodesign, washing, decontamination and food safety of plastic and metal packaging, with a view to extending packaging life.
  • RECYCLING focuses on single use and reusable packaging, tackling decontamination, mechanical recycling and food safety to offer a safe second life.
Relevance of the Au3Ra platform to the regional context

This project is perfectly in line with the new plan to promote the economy, employment, training and innovation in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. In fact, the Au3Ra platform is in line with the 5 strategic orientations set out by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region to implement its ambitions in terms of the economy, tourism, higher education, research and innovation, training and career guidance for the next 6 years.
  • Relocating the production of strategic goods and services by focusing on industry
  • Meet the challenges of decarbonization and digitalization of businesses
  • Provide guidance and training for the jobs that are recruiting and the jobs of tomorrow
  • Make the AURA region the home of engineers, technicians and scientists
  • Develop our region’s strengths
To implement these 5 strategic orientations, the AURA region has defined the fields and sectors of excellence in which the region clearly stands out from other regions, thanks to its undeniable competitive advantages and its ability to convey innovation, development and attractiveness. Several sectors of excellence stand out for their large number of high-growth companies, high skill levels and the presence of major R&I players.

The Au3Ra platform is an integral part of the “Sustainable Materials” cluster of excellence. In particular, the project is based on one of the region’s key business sectors, namely the «Plastics industry», but also on the wood industry via the paper and cardboard sector, and the materials recycling sector (plastics, paper andcardboard in particular).

Against this backdrop, and in order to support companies in these necessary transformations, the Au3Ra platform aims to roll out from March 2023, and over a total period of 4 years, services enabling companies in the packaging sector to demonstrate the reusability, recyclability and health safety of plastic, paper and cardboard packaging, while supporting them in identifying solutions to replace single-use packaging.

The Au3Ra platform is built around 4 investment themes, grouping together the equipment needed to carry out the services offered to companies in the packaging sector.
