Evaluating the permanence of paper/board
Storage and archiving of documents, information and documentation
- Evaluate the conformity of your paper/board materials with the permanence requirements of various standards
- Test the conformity of the permanence of your paper against standard ISO 9706
- Verify the suitability of containers for storing your archives
- Measure photographic activity on packaging materials (“PAT” test)
General informations
The Chemical Analysis and Physical Testing laboratories all have the necessary equipment and expertise to evaluate the conformity of your samples with requirements for conserving and archiving paper and board on a long-term basis.
Conformity can be verified:
- either on the material that will be conserved: this involves checking that it can be stored without major deterioration.
- or on the container used for conservation; this involves checking that the packaging will not be harmful to the materials that it is designed to contain.
Technical Data and Achievements
Various standards are available in the “Information and Documentation” category regarding the permanence and archiving of paper/board. All the methods described below can be implemented in our laboratories. This list below is not exhaustive:
Regarding the materials that will be kept for long periods of time:
- (NF) ISO 9706 “Paper for documents – Requirements for permanence”
- DIN 6738 - classes LDK 6-70 / LDK 12-80 / LDK 24-85
- ISO 11108, “Information and documentation. Archival paper. Requirements for permanence and durability”
- ISO 11798, “Information and documentation - Permanence and durability of writing, printing and copying on paper”
On materials intended for packaging:
- ISO 16245 “Boxes, file covers and other enclosures, made from cellulosic materials, for storage of paper and parchment documents”
- NF Z 40-014 “Recommendations and selection criteria for paper and board for conservation of paper documents and parchments”
- ISO 18916 “Imaging materials – Processed imaging materials – Photographic activity test for enclosure materials” (“PAT” test on products intended for conservation of photographic documents)
- ISO 23404 “Papers and boards used for conservation – Measurement of impact on paper cellulose ”
