High-speed laboratory calender
Cost-effective paper and board calendering in industrial conditions
- Develop calendered papers and boards for printing, writing, packaging and specialist markets
- Improve the surface and impart specific properties to papers and boards
- Replicate industrial calendering conditions without using large quantities of paper
The little story of the pilot
« Small but sturdy » is a description that could be applied to the CTP’s high-speed laboratory calender. It may seem just a little machine, but the calender is actually representative of the process used in the paper and board industry and is able to reproduce all the parameters of an industrial operation (speed, pressure and temperature). After being out of operation for several years, the CTP’s high-speed calender was brought back into service in 2026!
Because the machine is small, calendering conditions can be changed quickly and easily and tests require a minimum quantity of paper and board. Paper and cardboard can be processed in sheet or roll form.
Thanks to this flexibility, it is possible to quickly test the pertinence of all possible calendering options in order to improve the surface quality of papers and boards while at the same time limiting the loss of bulk.
Characteristics
Main calender characteristics
- Soft-nip or hard-nip calendering
- Maximum linear speed: 800 m/min,
- Maximum load: up to 1900 kg
- Preheating temperature : 270°C
Reel calendering
- Sheet width: 7 cm
- 1 or 2 nips
- Preheating of paper by electrical IR
Sheet calendering
- Dimensions: 7 cm x 60 cm
- 1 nip
- Preheating to 80°C on a hot plate
Characterisation of calendered samples
The CTP has both physical and optical testing laboratories for characterising the samples produced during the tests, especially in terms of thickness, smoothness, gloss and mechanical strength.
