Production of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)

  • To produce MFC from different qualities of pre-treated lignocellulosic fibres
  • To evaluate the interest of new fibres pre-treatments for MFC production
  • To adapt the process conditions to the targeted MFC quality for a given application

The little story of the pilot

The first experiments to produce microfibrillated cellulose have started in 2006 after the acquisition of a microfluidizer by FCBA InTechFibres division.
Then in 2011, with the financial support of ENCELPA, two homogenisers were bought to comple the production range of MFC at laboratory and pilot scales.
These systems have allowed developing competences and expertice in the domain of microfibrillated cellulose and depositing a patent in 2017 based on a mechano enzymatic pre-treatment combined with homogenisation.
MFC enable to improve the performances of many materials. At CTP, due to their film forming ability, MFCs allowed patenting a wet lamination technology creating barrier properties for paper packaging in substitution to plastics.

Characteristics

Three systems for producing MFC by high pressure homogenisation are available

Laboratory scale

The M-110EH Microfluidizer (Microfluidics)

  • Maximal pressure: 2000 bar
  • Volume: 0.1 – 2 l
  • Maximal consistency: 3%
  • Flow (at 2000 bar): 0.3 l/min
  • Homogenising chambers with a passing width of 400, 200 and 100 μm
  • Production of MFC batches up to 50 o.d g

The Panther NS3006 homogeniser (GEA Niro Soavi)

  • Maximal pressure: 1500 bar
  • Motor: 5.5 kW
  • Volume: 3 – 15 l
  • Maximal concentration: 4%
  • Flow (at 1500 bar): between 8 and 50 l/h, depending on the suspension viscosity
  • Production of MFC batches up to 600 o.d. g

Pilot scale

The Ariete NS3075 homogeniser (GEA Niro Soavi)

  • Maximal pressure: 1500 bar
  • Motor: 75 kW
  • Volume: 400 to 800 l
  • Maximal concentration: 4%
  • Flow (at 1500 bar): 800 to 1000 l/h
  • Two homogenising valves in series
  • Production of MFC batches up to 30 o.d. kg
