Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
Risk and hazard control to ensure quality of materials intended for food contact
- Analyze pulp, paperboard and packaging manufacturing practices
- Perform hazard analysis and risk assessment
- Improve quality assurance and quality control systems
- Provide technical and operational recommendations
Generate Value...
Producing a material suitable for food contact requires complete control of the manufacturing process, from the pulp production to the packaging of foodstuffs.
This control involves a thorough study of the hazards and a risk assessment throughout the production chain. It is ensured by the quality managing system, whose effectiveness relies on communication: documenting traceability, checking labelling, drawing up appropriate monitoring sheets, etc. are just a few examples.
The ultimate goal is to have all the information and documentation in hand to draft a Declaration of Conformity certifying the food contact compliance of the materials placed on the market.
Manufacture
Context and performance
Health crises do not spare the world of paperboard packaging but can be avoided if Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are meticulously followed. The framework Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 introduces the concept of GMP, which is specified in the dedicated Regulation (EC) No. 2023/2006.
Prior knowledge of food contact regulatory standards is required (see Expertise Sheet «Food contact materials» and associated sheets).

Content of services
The regulations named above are enriched by the work of several associations and confederations such as the French MCAS Club (association of producers of materials for food contact and health) and CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) who have drawn up GMP Guides to come in aid to manufacturers. The expertise of the CTP is based on these documents associated with standards EN 15593 or ISO / TS 22002-4 as well as the HACCP method.
The audit carried out by the CTP aims to:
- Make an inventory of the products manufactured, their uses and the constituents used
- Analyze hazards and assess the risks of manufacturing processesControl quality assurance and quality control systems
- Evaluate preventive measures and action plans
- Assess health and safety measures
- Check supply, storage and shipping conditions
- Ensure effective traceability.

Delivrables
At the end of the audit, the CTP provides a study report detailing the positive points of the system in place and proposing areas for improvement. It makes the company aware of the requirements related to the manufacture of materials dedicated to food contact.
